What you’ll do:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Underwriter specializing in Workers Compensation insurance, focusing initially on Small Business and expanding into Middle Market. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, detail-oriented, and possess strong analytical and collaborative skills. This role involves the review of underwriting files and support the establishment of a more portfolio-level approach to underwriting for a recently established MGA.
We are specifically looking for someone that has a solid background and understanding of the West Coast, specifically the CA WCIRB and knowledge of NCCI and other independent bureaus. They should utilize their underwriting expertise, communication and problem-solving skills to create a preeminent experience for our customers and agent partners, while ensuring that workers’ compensation insurance policies are underwritten profitably, fairly and accurately.
What you can expect:
Underwriting & Portfolio Management:
- Utilize knowledge to review applications and policies, ensuring that policies are accuratelypriced, while following bureau rules and state statutes.
- Use data analytics and pricing tools to appropriately price workers’ compensation policies and identify actionable insights for customers.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, regulations, and best practices.
- Regularly assess and maintain a balanced spread of risk across the portfolio (industries, states, regions).
- Promote diversification of risk and proper mix of business types.
- Ensure adequate classification using background knowledge and 3rd party solutions.
Customer & Agent Education and Partnership:
- Leverage sales techniques to build long-term relationships with our partners at Attune, customers and agents, guiding them through the sales process, and adding value to their business through the creation and use of commercial insights.
- Educate and guide customers and agents on workers’ compensation insurance.
- Partner with agents/account managers to identify and implement growth opportunities.
Innovation & Optimization:
- Proactively identify opportunities to streamline underwriting processes and enhance efficiency.
- Leverage new technology solutions and 3rd party vendors to automate the Underwriting Review and Q/A process as much as possible..
- Collaborate with a cross-functional team to identify and share pain points, helping drive solutions that decrease cost and continually improve customer and agent satisfaction.
- Collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, actuarial teammates, and others to develop new reports, KPIs, and models to guide the UW management discipline.
- Utilize various programs for day-to-day work (Google Suite, Guidewire, Zendesk, etc.).
Additional Duties:
- Participate in MGA launch activities, to ensure continued profitable growth and smooth transition to “steady state”.
- Potential to participate in customer worksite visits, agency visits and other key business meetings. Travel will be limited to the US and will be sporadic.
- Participate in various activities to promote continuous process improvement.
- Serve as a trusted underwriting expert on projects and committees throughout the organization.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you need to be successful:
- In addition to the competencies outlined below, a successful candidate will have two or more years previous experience working directly with customers and agents and be comfortable operating in a sales environment.
- Bilingual is a plus.
- Five or more years underwriting experience in Workers Compensation required.
- Experience in West Coast/WCIRB with knowledge in NCCI
- CPCU designation or other industry coursework preferred, but not required.

The compensation amount for this role is targeted at $107,800-$114,850. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including your experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
